Connect to Server with Ubuntu 11.04 Natty
Ubuntu has a neat little feature that has come in handy for me on many occasions… the ability to connect to a remote server from within Nautilus. After upgrading to Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal, I had a little bit of difficulty finding this feature. In previous versions you just had to go to the Places menu and there it was. Not to worry though, I found it… so for anyone that may be wondering where it went, I hope this helps you out.
Open up Nautilus and then check the top panel in the menu, click on File and about halfway down you’ll see “Connect to Server”.
Here’s a screenshot:

Okay, connect to server, but then what? Not the same thing I type in Windows, that’s for damn sure. I’ve tried a million different things and nothing works. How about a little help?

Hi Mike! What exactly are you trying to do?

Wil, I am having the same problem. i have used the Places tab for years to connect directly to my Web servers, enabling me to SSH into the server and work “hot” without having to constantly upload and check my work. It has disappeared in 11.04. The desktop display I have shows a Home folder (the topmost icon in the goofy display on the left) but there is no Files designation. There is only my home directory. I don’t see the familiar old Nautilus anywhere. It seems to have been replaced by the Apple-like toolbar on the left.
Like a lot of us, over the years I have been seduced into using the GUI and have forgotten how to do a lot of stuff from the command line. Now the GUI has gotten so gooey I can’t figure out how to do lots of things that used to be quite simple.

Hi Jim… all you have to do is open Nautilus and make sure it’s on top. Then go up to the top bar and click on File and you’ll see Connect to Server as an option. I’m adding a screenshot to the post so you can see what I mean. Let me know if you’re still having trouble with it.

Thanks, Wil. I’ve relied on this feature for years for SSH file transfers and was frustrated when I couldn’t find it in Natty. This Unity interface has me so confused. I do a lot of things from the command line, but this is one GUI feature I use. At the terminal, sftp doesn’t allow for recursive operations (sure, you can use mget for multiple files, but it is not recursive), and you can’t easily work on files “hot” like Jim mentioned above this way.
Thanks again.

After a fresh install of 11.04 Natty Nearly. The ‘ nautilus actions configuration’ required installing. This then allowed connect to serveroption…!

Nice! Thanks, man. I use this GUI SFTP to log into my university’s servers. I hadn’t logged in through Natty yet, though.
Thanks!
